There’s no doubt from a paperwork perspective the world is getting easier to explore, and many countries who traditionally have required long Visa application processes have now realised the benefits of opening borders; in particular to the wave of post-pandemic adventure tourists.

That said, with regulations changing as quickly as the political winds blow, it’s important to start working out what you need to cross borders roughly 90 days prior to travel. Our team have kindly compiled information on current Visa requirements and costs, to assist with this.

South African Passport Holders

 

Let’s start with the easiest one, the good news for all you South African Passport Holders out there, is that to accompany us on The Africa Rally will take very little prior administration!

In fact, the Visa outlook for the countries you could visit on The Africa Rally is as follows:

South Africa

$0 Welcome Home! No Visas required.

Botswana

$0 No Visas required, only a valid passport with a minimum of two blank pages.

Zambia

$0 Visa available on arrival at no cost.

Malawi

$0 Visa available on arrival at no cost, or can be obtained in advance through the eVisa system.

Tanzania

$0 No Visas required, only a valid passport with a minimum of two blank pages. You may also be required to present your Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate to obtain entry.

Kenya

$0 No Visas required, however as of January 2024 Kenya introduced an Electronic Travel Authorisation System which all nationalities outside of the EAC block must use.

The admin cost for South African nationals to receive an eTA has recently been removed, but the eTA itself is still required. It can be processed up to 3 months in advance of travel here: Apply for Kenyan eTA

Zimbabwe

$0 No Visas required, only a valid passport with a minimum of two blank pages.

Mozambique

$0 No Visas required, only a valid passport with a minimum of two blank pages.

eSwatini

$0 No Visa fee for tourists up to 30 days, only a valid passport with a minimum of two blank pages required. If driving in, a Road Toll Fee of R100 is payable by cash or card.

American & Canadian Passport Holders

 

South Africa

$0 Visa available on arrival at no cost.

Botswana

$0 Visa available on arrival at no cost.

Zambia

$50 Visa available on arrival at the Kazungula Border Bridge from Botswana, or available to apply in advance.

Malawi

$0 No Visas required, as of February 2024.

Tanzania

$50 for Canadians / $100 for Americans Visa available on arrival, or through an eVisa system in advance. You may also be required to present your Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate to obtain entry.

Kenya

$30 No Visas required, however as of January 2024 Kenya introduced an Electronic Travel Authorisation System which all nationalities outside of the EAC block must use.

Zimbabwe

Mozambique

$10 or MZN 650 payable by cash or card Visa available on arrival or through an eVisa system with a processing fee.

eSwatini

$0 No Visa fee for tourists up to 30 days, only a valid passport with a minimum of two blank pages required. If driving in, a Road Toll Fee of R100 is payable by cash or card.

British and European Union Passport Holders

South Africa

$0 Visa available on arrival at no cost.

Botswana

$0 Visa available on arrival at no cost.

Zambia

$0 Visa available on arrival at the Kazungula Border Bridge from Botswana, or available to apply in advance. Note you will however need $15 USD to pay for the bridge toll, then the $20 for the carbon tax, $9 car insurance, and $20 road tax. This can be paid in Kwacha, in USD, or can be paid by card.

Malawi

$0 No Visas required, as of February 2024.

$50 Visa available on arrival or through an eVisa system.

Kenya

All passport holders should confirm that their passport is currently valid, ideally has a minimum of two blank pages per Visa required country, and that their passport is valid for an additional six months after the date of their return to their home country.
